From the series: Proof of Purchase
Mixed media with found packaging, hardware, thread, and resin
22 × 28 inches
2026
Description:
In Status - SOLD, Constantine confronts the commodification of identity through the language of transaction. “Sold” functions not only as conclusion, but as condition; a marker of exchange that extends beyond objects into labor, status, and social worth.
The subject’s eyes are not his own. They have been extracted from the companion works Status - Modified and Status - Standardized, then stitched and stapled onto this figure. Vision becomes transferable, reassigned across bodies as though interchangeable parts. The act of visible suturing refuses illusion; identity here is assembled, not innate.
Unlike the altered figures in the related works, this subject wears blue-collar overalls, garments associated with manual labor and industrial production. The contrast is deliberate. Where the others suggest refinement or systemic polish, this figure embodies the labor that sustains the market itself.
Layered materials and embedded fragments function as evidence rather than decoration. Encased in resin, the moment of transaction becomes permanent. What has been purchased, or claimed, cannot be undone.
